SPF for my face

When most people hear “SPF,” they think of sunscreen at the beach or that greasy bottle you keep for summer lake days. But in reality, SPF is one of the most important daily steps in your skincare routine — and it deserves way more attention than just seasonal use.

Why You Need SPF Every Day (Yes, Every Day)

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is present 365 days a year, not just when it’s sunny. UVA rays (the aging rays) can penetrate windows, meaning your skin is still at risk even if you're indoors, driving, or sitting near natural light. These rays are responsible for collagen breakdown, fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots — all the things we’re working so hard to correct or prevent with skincare products and treatments.

SPF protects against:

  • Premature aging

  • Sunburns and inflammation

  • Hyperpigmentation and dark spots

  • Skin cancer risk

  • Loss of firmness and elasticity

And trust me — I used to overlook SPF too.

When I made the transition from nursing to running a medical spa, the education I received around sun protection was truly a game changer. I had no idea just how much daily SPF use could improve the skin — not just cosmetically, but medically. If there’s one skincare step I find myself repeating over and over again to clients, it’s this one. SPF is absolutely one of the most important products in my own skincare and the one I emphasize most in yours.

If you’re using professional-grade products like retinols, vitamin C, or exfoliating acids, you must wear SPF. These ingredients make your skin more sensitive to light, and skipping sunscreen can actually undo the progress you're making.

When Should You Wear SPF?

The short answer: every single day.
But here’s a breakdown of specific times when SPF is especially important:

  • After professional treatments like microneedling, chemical peels, facials, or lasers

  • When using active ingredients like retinol, AHAs/BHAs, or vitamin C

  • During outdoor activities — from walking your dog to sitting at a ballgame

  • While driving or working near windows

  • On cloudy days (yes, UV rays still break through)

Alastin’s sunscreens are built with skin barrier support in mind, making them excellent for sensitive or post-treatment skin. Their formulas often double as primers and come in both tinted and untinted versions.

Client favorite: HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum SPF 36 – A sheer, universally flattering tint that evens skin tone while offering broad-spectrum protection.

Quick Tips for Applying SPF Correctly

  • Apply SPF as the last step of your morning routine, before makeup.

  • Use about a nickel-sized amount for the face and more for the neck and chest.

  • Reapply every 2 hours if you’re outside or sweating.

  • Don’t forget your ears, hands, and around your eyes — some of the most sun-exposed and forgotten areas.

Protect your glow, prevent the damage, and stay consistent — your skin will thank you later.
And yes — if you hear me repeat myself, it’s probably about SPF. Because it really is that important.
