Wise Skin Wednesday: Why Does Our Skin Age?

Understanding the biggest factors behind aging skin.
One of the most common questions we hear is, "Why is my skin changing?" Fine lines seem to appear overnight, your skin may feel drier than it used to, or you notice your complexion isn't as bright or firm as it once was. While aging is a natural part of life, there are actually many different factors that contribute to how our skin changes over time.
During last week's Wise Skin Wednesday Live, Shelly talked about some of the biggest reasons our skin ages and the good news is that many of them are things we can help improve or slow down.
1. Sun Exposure
If there is one factor that has the biggest impact on our skin, it's the sun.
Years of UV exposure break down collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and smooth. Over time, this can lead to:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Brown spots and uneven pigmentation
- Rough texture
- Loss of elasticity
Daily sunscreen is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your skin, even on cloudy days and during the winter. Seems like an easy prevention to me, sunscreen it up!
2. Natural Aging
As we get older, our bodies naturally produce less collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.
This means our skin gradually becomes:
- Thinner
- Drier
- Less firm
- Slower to heal and renew itself
While we can't stop the aging process, we can support healthy skin with treatments, skincare, and healthy habits.
3. Hormonal Changes
Hormones play a much bigger role in skin health than many people realize.
Changes during pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disorders, or other hormonal shifts can affect:
- Skin hydration
- Oil production
- Acne
- Pigmentation
- Collagen production
These changes can happen gradually or seemingly overnight.
4. Your Skincare Routine
Using the right products consistently makes a difference. A good skincare routine helps protect your skin barrier, improve hydration, and encourage healthy cell turnover. On the other hand, skipping sunscreen, using harsh products, or not moisturizing can speed up visible signs of aging.
Remember, skincare doesn't have to involve dozens of products. A consistent routine with quality ingredients is often more effective than an overcomplicated one.
5. Lifestyle Habits
Our daily habits show up on our skin.
Things like:
- Smoking or nicotine use
- Poor nutrition
- Lack of sleep
- Chronic stress
- Dehydration
- Excessive alcohol consumption
can all contribute to premature aging and dull, tired-looking skin.
Healthy skin starts from the inside out.
6. Genetics
Some parts of aging are simply written into our DNA. Genetics influence things like skin thickness, collagen production, pigmentation, and when certain signs of aging begin to appear. While we can't change our genetics, we can absolutely influence how our skin ages through prevention and good skincare habits.
7. Environmental Stress
Our skin faces daily exposure to pollution, wind, extreme temperatures, and other environmental stressors. These factors create oxidative stress, which can damage healthy skin cells over time and contribute to premature aging. Protecting your skin with antioxidants and maintaining a healthy skin barrier can help reduce this damage.
8. Repetitive Facial Movements
Every smile, laugh, squint, and facial expression tells part of our story. Over time, these repeated movements create dynamic lines that can eventually become visible even when your face is at rest.
This is one reason treatments like anti-wrinkle injections can help soften expression lines while still allowing natural movement when performed appropriately.
Aging Is Normal, But Healthy Skin Is Always the Goal
Aging isn't something we need to "fix." It's a natural part of life. Our goal at Tailored to You isn't to help you look like someone else it's to help you feel confident in your own skin at every stage of life.
Sometimes that means building a simple skincare routine. Sometimes it's adding sunscreen every day. Other times it may be treatments that stimulate collagen, improve skin texture, or simply help you feel refreshed. Healthy skin isn't about perfection. It's about taking care of the skin you're in. If you have questions about your skin or aren't sure where to start, stop by Tailored to You. We'd love to help you build a plan that's personalized to your skin, your goals, and your lifestyle.
We'll see you this week for another Wise Skin Wednesday!
